The Annapolis Valley offers abundant nutritious food, fresh air, and plenty of opportunities for healthy exercise.

Medical care

The Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. The authority operates hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province.

In the Annapolis Valley, NSHA manages and provides healthcare services at three hospitals and three health centres.

The hospitals are Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton, and Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville. All offer medical and surgical care, an emergency department, and many other services.

The three health centres are Annapolis Community Health Centre in Annapolis Royal, Western Kings Memorial Health Centre in Berwick, and Eastern Kings Memorial Community Health Centre in Wolfville. West Hants is part of the West Hants Uniacke Community Health Board.

In addition, the three First Nations have health centres:

  • Annapolis Valley First Nation Health Centre
  • Glooscap First Nation Health and Healing Centre
  • Bear River First Nation Health Centre

The Valley Hospice in Kentville is a stand-alone, home-like health facility. It provides palliative care for patients nearing the end of life who don't require care in a hospital, yet have more care needs than can be provided at home.

We acknowledge that we are in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People.  This territory is covered by the "Treaties of Peace and Friendship" which Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People first signed with the British Crown in 1725.  The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors of African descent who came before us to this land.
