Kings County covers the northeastern part of the Annapolis Valley.

The Municipality of the County of Kings is the local government body responsible for all of Kings County except for Annapolis Valley First Nation and Glooscap First Nation, and the Towns of Berwick, Kentville and Wolfville. The First Nations and the Towns are self-governed.

Kings is the third most populous municipality in the province, home to more than 47,000 residents. Its economic drivers are agriculture, tourism, food and beverage, manufacturing, retail, military and health-care services. The Municipality's Business & Economic Development Office helps existing businesses to develop and grow. It also seeks opportunities to attract new investment.

Recreation Services staff work to improve park, leisure, and recreational opportunities. The new Active Kings County: An Active Transportation Plan is guiding the Municipality to advance quality, accessible and inclusive active transportation opportunities.

Communities

The Municipality of the County of Kings is home to thriving communities of all sizes. Among them are seven villages, each with its own flavour and ambience, plus the unincorporated community of Coldbrook:

Aylesford

The Village of Aylesford (population about 900) is a farming community. Local attractions include Oaklawn Farm Zoo, which cares for exotic, endangered and rescued animal species in a natural setting. Aylesford Lake Beach has a boardwalk, picnic tables, a public boat launch, boat docks, canteen, washrooms, playgrounds, and other amenities.

Canning

The Village of Canning (population about 700) has many of the amenities of larger centres. These include a post office, supermarket, elementary and high schools, retail stores, arena, restaurants and cafés, and a nearby local winery. Canning is a popular gateway to Blomidon Provincial Park, the Look Off, Cape Split and other recreational destinations.

Coldbrook

Coldbrook (population about 2,300) is an unincorporated community just west of Kentville. It features several restaurants and a variety of retail businesses. Coldbrook is also home to Scotian Gold, a grower-owned tree fruit cooperative that stores and packs 60% of the apple production in Atlantic Canada.

Cornwallis Square

The Village of Cornwallis Square encompasses the communities of Waterville, Cambridge, Grafton and Woodville. Grafton and Woodville are in the middle of the farming belt. Waterville and Cambridge are along Highway No. 1 at the edges of the agricultural district. The Municipality's largest manufacturer, Michelin, is based in Waterville.

Greenwood

The Village of Greenwood (population about 2,000) is home to 14 Wing Greenwood, the largest air force base in Eastern Canada. Greenwood Mall has over 50 shops plus a giant indoor play area for children. Recreation activities are available through 14 Wing Community Centre, which operates an outdoor pool and playground.

Kingston

The Village of Kingston (population about 3,000) is next to the Village of Greenwood and CFB Greenwood. It is centrally located for easy access to Southwest Nova Scotia. The Village's many amenities and services include schools, parks, shopping, a golf and country club, a library, and playgrounds.

New Minas

The Village of New Minas (population about 4,200) is the retail centre of the eastern Annapolis Valley. A wide choice of major retailers as well as family-run businesses and specialty boutiques are in New Minas. Its many amenities include schools, parks and playgrounds, restaurants, and the Louis Millett Community Complex, which includes several community rooms, a gymnasium, a small fitness centre, and a large banquet hall.

Port Williams

The Village of Port Williams (population about 900) is an agricultural community with schools, shopping, a library, recreational facilities, and restaurants. Only minutes from the hubs of Wolfville, New Minas and Kentville, the Village is home to craft breweries and a distillery, and close to several local wineries. The business directory provides a guide to its goods and services.

We acknowledge that we are in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People.  This territory is covered by the "Treaties of Peace and Friendship" which Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People first signed with the British Crown in 1725.  The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
